Someone Else's Story

My good friend (and former professor, mentor, thesis advisor, and by this point it's simplest to simply say good friend) Joe Lippincott has been following the ospreys who live in an Audubon nest near his home in Moswetuset Hummock for years now. He's utterly fascinated by them and his passion piqued my curiosity. I decided to spend my last day off in the northeast perched on a milk crate next to Joe watching these guys. He even lent me an extra 1000 mm lens. We were hoping the male would come back to the nest with a fish or something interesting, but he kept returning empty-taloned. I liked this shot, though-- his ladyfriend looks like she was hoping for better luck, too.

Here's another couple shot (different species). I told Joe and his wife Karen to do something funny, and this is what I got.

Columbia Hall, Demolished

I'd felt a special bond with Columbia Hall in Contoocook, Nh., ever since my critically-acclaimed picture of a shadow of a tree on it ran on our front page in January. I was kind of sad to see the historic hall come down. The little boys were mostly excited to see all the trucks.

Tilton's (allegedly) haunted 1875 Inn

I used Pocket Wizards to make a creepy assignment even more creepy...

Photo illustration in the Charles E. Tilton room at the 1875 Inn in Tilton, Nh., on Monday, May 10, 2010. The historic inn, long rumored to be haunted, will be featured in an upcoming episode of Ghosthunters. (Sarah Beth Glicksteen/Concord Monitor photo)

Inn Spirit (hah) is a good Sunday read. Check it out. And, if you're wondering, I'm pretty sure I met one of the ghosts.

An alpaca in a tutu

Here's a fun little feature from last weekend. For the record, I never hope for a tiara to break. I just hope to be there when it happens.

Jazmin Martel, 11, from Hopkinton, reacts as she breaks her alpaca's tiara while undressing it after partipating in the costume class of the alpaca and llama show during the 34th annual New Hampshire Sheep and Wool Festival at Hopkinton State Fairgrounds in Contoocook on May 8, 2010. Martel and her al paca, Mate, dressed up as dancers. Her stepsister and her alpaca (left) dressed up as rockstars. All participants earned ribbons. (Sarah Beth Glicksteen/Concord Monitor staff)

Here's a gallery of more from the New Hampshire Sheep and Wool Festival, including The Deli Llama, who dressed up as a sandwich.

Colby-Sawyer Commencement 2010

Yesterday I covered commencement for the Colby-Sawyer College Class of 2010 in New London, Nh.

Keeping with the grand tradition of New England commencement ceremonies, it rained through most of their celebration. But after a while, a gorgeous fog fell over the entire campus.

I guess this means I'm no longer a "recent graduate". Congratulations, class of 2010. I hope you have better luck finding jobs than we did.
